The Outdoor Timber Sign Guide

A sign that lives outdoors in Ireland faces rain, salt air, UV and forty shades of weather — often in the same afternoon. This guide covers what actually matters when you specify an outdoor timber sign: the wood, the finish, the mounting, and the letters themselves. It is written by the team who laser-engrave signs every week at our Dublin workshop.

1. Choosing the timber

Not all wood behaves the same outside. Density, natural oils and grain structure determine how a species weathers and how crisply it takes deep laser engraving.

Availability varies by project — timbers are stocked or supplied to order, and we confirm options and lead times when you enquire.

2. Finishes and how timber weathers

Left untreated, most exterior timbers weather to a silver-grey within one to two years. Some clients want exactly that; others want the fresh-cut tone preserved.

• Exterior oils (tung, hard-wax, decking oils) feed the timber and keep colour longest, but need re-application every 12–24 months.
• UV-filter clear coats slow silvering and add water resistance; matte versions keep the natural look.
• Deliberate weathering — no finish at all — suits heritage and rural settings, and is the lowest-maintenance option of the three.

3. Mounting methods

How a sign is fixed matters as much as what it is made of. The main approaches:

• Face-fixed to a wall — stainless screws through the face, or hidden keyhole fixings on the rear for a clean front. Use stainless or brass outdoors; ordinary steel will streak the timber.
• Stand-off fixings — the sign floats 15–25 mm off the wall on stainless barrels. Air circulates behind the board, which dramatically slows moisture build-up.
• Post-mounted — for entrances and wayfinding. Keep the bottom edge of the timber clear of soil and standing water; ground contact is the fastest way to shorten a sign's life.
• Hanging — the classic pub style, from a bracket on stainless eyes and chain. Allow for wind swing and check fixings annually.

4. Letter sizing and legibility

The most common outdoor signage mistake is letters that are too small for the viewing distance. A reliable rule of thumb: every 25 mm of letter height buys roughly 10 metres of comfortable reading distance.

Bold, simple typefaces engrave and read best at distance. Fine serifs and script faces are beautiful up close — keep them for door-level signage and menus.

5. Why deep engraving outlasts print

Printed or vinyl graphics sit on the surface, so weather attacks them from day one. Deep laser engraving cuts the artwork into the timber — typically 1–3 mm — so the letterforms are part of the board itself. Even as the surface weathers and silvers, the carved letters keep their shadow and stay readable. It is the same reason century-old carved shop signs are still legible while decade-old printed boards are not.

Engraving also ages gracefully: a weathered engraved sign looks intentional and characterful, where peeling print simply looks tired.
